New Chambers welcomes two new Readers – Jessica Hudson and Nicola Alroe

New Chambers warmly welcomes two new readers to the Floor, Jessica Hudson and Nicola Alroe.

JESSICA HUDSON

Jessica was an Associate Professor at UNSW, and prior to that a solicitor at King & Mallesons working in Public M&A and Dispute Resolution.

Jessica is an expert in the areas of equity and trusts and their application to banking and financial services, corporations, consumer law and private wealth management. Jessica has published widely in these areas.

She was Tipstaff to the Hon. Justice Julie Ward of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 2010.

Jessica holds a PhD, and Bachelor of Law (Hons 1) and Bachelor of Arts from UNSW and a BCL (with Distinction) from the University of Oxford.

Jessica is currently working on a paper she is giving at the Supreme Court of New South Wales Annual Judges’ Conference in Newcastle titled ‘The Proper Purposes Rule: Preventing Law’s Intentional Abuse’.

NICOLA ALROE

Prior to being called to the Bar, Nicola worked as a Senior Associate in the Public Law Team at MinterEllison, and as an Associate to the Hon Justice Jacqueline Gleeson in the High Court of Australia and the Federal Court of Australia. She has also worked as a lawyer within the Office of the Solicitor Assisting the Disability Royal Commission and as a lawyer in the Dispute Resolution Team at the Australian Government Solicitor in Canberra, where her practice focused on information and privacy law.

In these roles Nicola frequently drafted advices, witness statements and submissions; and instructed counsel at hearings. While at MinterEllison, she frequently appeared as a solicitor advocate in mediations and interlocutory and final hearings in the AAT and Federal Circuit Court.

Nicola graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Arts (Government) and a Bachelor of Laws with Honours. She later completed a Master of Laws at the London School of Economics (LSE), where she graduated with Distinction, placed first in the subject Freedom of Speech, Media and the Law and served as an editor of the LSE Law Review.

Nicola has previously held sessional academic positions at the University of Sydney and the Australian National University. Her research interests include defamation law, climate change litigation and the interactions between constitutional and tort law.
