Experience

Dominic Villa SC has a multidisciplinary practice extending across a wide range of commercial, administrative and governmental disputes.  With a career spanning over three decades, Dominic has established himself as a leading advocate in trial courts, appellate courts, and arbitral tribunals throughout Australia and internationally.

Dominic practises extensively in the area of public law, by way of constitutional challenges to legislation, judicial review and merits review of governmental conduct, and liability claims against and on behalf of various government departments throughout Australia.

Dominic is the author of the highly-acclaimed Annotated Civil Liability Act 2002 (NSW) and is an expert in all facets of tort law including professional liability, negligence, intentional infliction of economic loss, misfeasance in public office, malicious prosecution and institutional abuse.

Dominic has a substantial practice in insurance and re-insurance, regularly advising on coverage and appearing in indemnity disputes on behalf of insurers and insureds.  His practice includes various forms of Financial Lines (in particular Professional Indemnity and D&O Insurance), Life (in particular TPD), and Broadform Liability Insurances.

Dominic acts for numerous large privately-held and publicly-listed companies in a variety of mining, manufacturing, transportation and sale of goods disputes in a variety of fora, including domestic courts and private arbitral mechanisms (domestic and international).

Dominic has a particular interest in sports arbitration.  He has regularly appeared before the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and challenged CAS awards in the Swiss Federal Tribunal.  He has appeared before various national and international arbitral bodies in a number of sports, and is currently the Chair of the Football Australia National Disputes Resolution Chamber which determines various football-related commercial disputes.
