Experience

Greg O’Mahoney has a wide-ranging practice in commercial and public law. He appears in appellate and trial courts, arbitral tribunals and commissions of inquiry.

Greg’s commercial practice includes corporate law, contractual disputes, insurance, aviation, maritime, banking, arbitrations and class actions. His public law practice includes regulatory litigation, corporate crime, taxation law, merits and judicial review, constitutional law and proceeds of crime litigation.

Greg appeared for Carnival and Princess Cruises in the class action brought by passengers on the Ruby Princess, the former Treasurer of the Arrium Group in proceedings brought by international lenders and the former CFO of the Star Group in litigation concerning breaches of directors’ duties.

He appears widely for companies/individuals and regulators in proceedings brought by ASIC, APRA, the Commissioner of Taxation, the Australian Information Commissioner, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and the Australian Federal Police.

Greg appears regularly in public inquiries across Australia, including corruption inquiries, Royal Commissions and coronial inquests. He has appeared in numerous ICAC inquiries, including four as Counsel Assisting. He appeared for: Airbus in the IGADF Inquiry into the crash of an MRH90 helicopter off Lindeman Island; the NT Government in the Royal Commission into the Detention and Protection of Children and the ship owners in the Special Commission of Inquiry into the Ruby Princess. He is a member of the NSW Bar Association’s Inquests and Inquiries Committee.

Greg has been recognised in the Australian Bar Legal 500 (Commercial Disputes; Regulatory and White-Collar Crime) and Doyle’s Guide (Transport Litigation; Taxation Law).

Prior to coming to the Bar, Greg was Associate to the Hon. Murray Gleeson A.C., Chief Justice of Australia, and worked as a solicitor in litigation and arbitration at Mallesons Stephen Jacques.

He attended Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship for NSW. He has a BCL and DPhil from Oxford and a BA and LLB from the University of Sydney. During his BCL year, he was awarded the Ralph Chiles CBE Prize for Comparative Human Rights. During his time at Sydney University, he won the World Universities’ Debating Championships in Glasgow.

Greg has taught corporations and contract law at Sydney University and Oxford University. He has established and taught a Masters course at Sydney University on the regulation of insider trading and market manipulation.
